April meeting recap: Next steps on police reform and accountability

On April 29, eight people met to take the next step towards making Wilsonville a more diverse, inclusive, and equitable place.

We discussed the Derek Chauvin verdict and talked about what should be our next step for police reform and accountability. After a robust discussion, we landed on the following actions:

  • Put together a best practices document on similar-sized cities to Wilsonville and what they are doing for reform and oversight

  • Engage and follow along with the City of Wilsonville’s new DEI committee to see how they are going to address policing

We then did a roundtable of updates on WAIC actions, which included a meeting with the West Linn Mayor to talk about standing up a DEI committee in that city, meeting with the Clackamas County restorative justice coalition, supporting on-going efforts for vaccinations, and we met with a group of Wilsonville High School students to talk about how we can support their interest in standing up a DEI group.

Housing Equity Action Team

A group of six people met to discuss and coordinate efforts around supporting inclusive housing in Wilsonville. As you can see from the image below, we covered a lot. Keep scrolling to read the recap. If you would like to join our next meeting, email us today!

We discussed and agreed upon a purpose for this group, that we would coalesce around the issue of housing, and acknowledged that we have the time and privilege to take time to be in this meeting to plan, but that our actions will be grounded in the relationships with

We did a brainstorming session to map out the issues of interest under the main topic areas: middle mix income housing, emergency short term, medically supported long term, and housing history/communications.

In addition to topics of interest, we discussed the challenges and opportunities to pursuing outcomes for inclusive housing (green arrows), which were as follows:

  • Transportation costs, connections, and low-cost options such as carsharing (which we have none of in Wilsonville)

  • If we bring in resources, they need to connect to existing residents? Many times this misses the mark and new resources are framed for people moving into the community

  • HOA and ongoing fees can be difficult to maintain but are not talked about much in housing affordability.

  • How will we deal with larger, macroeconomic issues like high land and development costs?

  • With a severe lack of suburban resources for mental health and people experiencing homelessness how do we offer resources but not bear the entire south regional burden as the “magnet”?

In the end, we decided to focus on the following topics:

  1. Housing communication, information, history, facts, and organizing

  2. Emergency and short-term transitional housing and resources
