RECAP: June 25 WAIC Gathering

RECAP: WAIC Gathering, June 25

As described in the June 4 meeting recap, over the next few months we’re looking to restart WAIC to help unite neighbors and build a Wilsonville where everyone experiences this place as an inclusive community that celebrates diversity, and takes on hard conversations and decisions to address inequity.

Quick recap: Connection, ideation, and enthusiasm generated

12 people showed up to partake in homemade snacks, learn more about each other, and discuss how we can support the advancement of diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts in Wilsonville! Overall, we ended the meeting with energy behind furthering the following ideas and laying out a path to reaffirm WAIC leadership roles:

  • Education and awareness communications and conversations

  • Cultural diversity event with celebration and access to resources

  • Community conversation events

  • Relationship-based advocacy

  • Events where people don’t have to already belong to a certain group

We would love to have you join us on July 23 at our next gathering. Please reach out to us at connect@wilsonvillealliance.org if you are interested.

Deeper dive recap

Furthering ideas for WAIC’s role and actions in the community

We started with an opening activity from Heather that has us share and find commonality around our name history. We then spent time looking back at our last discussion and the ideas we generated. Our next activity was a brainstorming and gallery walk on large sheets of paper that built upon these action ideas. As you scroll through below, you can see the ideas in clouds along with details on the why, how, and what made people excited about the topic.

Better understanding WAIC leadership positions and process to identify people

We did a popcorn reading through the WAIC leadership positions and held space for discussion and input. Quality points were made about staggering terms, especially for the Co-Chairs, and extending the terms from annual to bi-annual. Although we have an outline process for decision making, we don’t have extensive bylaws. Before the July 23 meeting, we committed to share what we have today around decision-making and a proposed timeline to clarify the process to identify leaders.

We ended the meeting with a group share about people that inspired us. Thank you to Sarah for facilitating our closing!
